Rockin’ To A Different Beat: Frank Ocean

By 8:58 PM

Formally known as Christopher “Lonny” Breaux, New Orleans, LA, Los Angeles, CA raised Frank Ocean states that “None of us are our names. If you don’t like your name, then change your name.”  So with a simple click on LegalZoom and a few document signature, this is exactly what the singer/songwriter did.

In March 2011, Ocean released his project “nostalgia, Ultra.”  Coming up with the name only five minutes before it was completed, Ocean coins this compilation as “nostalgic,” and “modern.” Ocean’s first mixtape, “nostalgia, ULTRA.” mainly focuses on relationships, his personal life, and his view on society. Noted by Rolling Stone magazine as a “gifted, avant R&B smoothie,” Def Jam has announced their plans to re-release “Nostalgia, Ultra” as an EP, set to debut on iTunes on May 31, 2011, with physical cpies being available on July 26, 2011.  Often being compared to heavy-weight R&B/Rap champ Drake, Ocean states that Drake reached out to him with a little advice, complimenting him on the sound of his release.

Originally from New Orleans, LA, Ocean evacuated from the University of New Orleans and moved to Los Angeles, CA just as Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005.  Once in Los Angles, Ocean joined OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All), often simply called Odd Future, at the end of 2009.  Since then, Ocean has written songs for popular artists such as Justin Bieber, Brandy Norwood, Beyonce Knowles, and John Legend.
